Photo-first checklist

What to ask and inspect

Ask the seller for photos of the label/serial and the screen powered on. A photo can clarify condition, but it does not prove authenticity.

1Power & contacts

Confirm it starts reliably

  • Ask for a short video or clear photo showing the system powered on and a game running.
  • Check whether the power switch feels consistent; ask if the system ever cuts out or needs pressure to stay on.
  • For battery-powered models, inspect the battery bay for corrosion, residue, or damaged contacts. Ask whether batteries are included.
2Screen & lens

Look for a powered-on display

  • Ask for the screen lit with a game image visible, not only an unpowered front photo.
  • Check the photo for lines, dead pixels, uneven illumination, scratches, cracks, and lens separation; ask about defects hidden by glare.
  • For a backlit or frontlit system, ask the seller to show the light at each available setting.
3Sound & controls

Test the parts you will use

  • Ask whether the speaker works and whether volume changes as expected; try headphones only if the model has the relevant jack.
  • Ask for button and directional-pad testing, including Start/Select and shoulder buttons where fitted.
  • Ask the seller to show a cartridge loading and a game responding to input.
4Shell & battery cover

Check fit, labels, and repairs

  • Request sharp photos of the front, back, screws, battery bay, battery cover, and label/serial area.
  • Check for cracks, missing screws, damaged ports, loose seams, heavy wear, or a missing battery door.
  • Ask whether the shell, buttons, lens, screen, battery, or other parts have been replaced. A clean or mismatched shell is a reason to ask, not proof of a problem.
5SP charging port

For a Game Boy Advance SP

  • Ask for a photo of the charging port and a powered-on test while the system is charging.
  • Ask whether the charger is included and whether the port or battery has ever been repaired or replaced.
  • Check for looseness, bent or corroded contacts, and charging that stops when the cable moves.
6Terms & shipping

Know the seller’s plan

  • Read the return policy and ask how a not-as-described item is handled before paying.
  • Confirm what is included, how it will be packed, and whether tracking is provided.
  • Keep the listing description and seller messages so the stated condition and any disclosed modifications are clear.

Modded shells and IPS or other replacement screens can be a valid personal preference. Ask the seller to disclose modifications and show them clearly; do not infer originality from shell color or appearance alone.
